Late Summer 2021

PCC Wrap-up

Project Community Connect was a success! 29 organizations and agencies participated in the event that served 130 people: 94 adults (42 homeless) and 36 children (6 homeless). The venue, outside at Long Beach Elementary School, was comfortable and large enough so that no one felt crowded. Visitors were able to sign up for DSHS services, including food coupons, TANF, and medical benefits. They met with the good people from Willapa Behavioral Health, painted a rock with Peace of Mind volunteers, picked up baby formula, clothing, hygiene items, and reading glasses, got a Covid vaccine, and much more. Free box lunches were provided for guests and their families.

P2P

Pack2School is on August 27, 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM. PPR will provide family hygiene kits. These kits contain a family size shampoo and conditioner, bath soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and deodorant. Combs, brushes, shaving products, and feminine hygiene products will also be available. In addition, PPR provides gently used and new free clothing for Pack2School families.

The Power of Giving

“I don’t know where I’m going to lay my head at night.”

“I’ve never had to ask for help before.”

“I’m, um, not sure how to do this. I was given your number by the Health Department.”

This is how most Covid HUB encounters begin. Every caller needs assistance in some form, and that could be food, gas, Discover Pass, or camping equipment. Their needs are simple but complex. Peninsula Poverty Response responds to urgent basic needs; that includes food, shelter, hygiene, and transportation.

From January this year through July, PPR has provided assistance to 75 families. PPR could not help these families without the generosity of our donors. Each gift makes help available to a family in need. Thank you, we are grateful for you.

Annual Fundraising Campaign

The Covid HUB was PPR’s response to the pandemic. PPR can nimbly respond to immediate needs of food and gas money. As the pandemic has changed, so have the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors and friends. In early October, the eviction moratorium will end, and enhanced unemployment benefits will have stopped. This will most likely trigger an avalanche of evictions for nonpayment of rent resulting in more homeless families.

Requests are being made for help with temporary shelter including motel rooms or RV space rent. PPR has not previously offered this kind of assistance because we did not have the necessary funds to do so. As our community continues to face the challenges of the pandemic, PPR is planning ways to help those in need. We are planning on a 2021 Annual Fundraising Campaign with $50,000 as our goal. These funds will help defray the costs of short-term motel stays and also assist with energy bills, utilities, and first and last month’s rent, Working together, we will continue to reduce poverty on the Long Beach Peninsula through advocacy, awareness, and action.
